When You Can’t Think Of What To Do...
Here I am again, at the keyboard and my mind is blank. I know I need to write a blog for those who read it, but……..
So here goes. From my heart. Survival is a many faceted thing. There are many challenges and problems that will come at you. Some unexpected and some you prepared to face. There will always be a crisis. We live in a broken world where the norm for millennia has been poverty and struggle for most people. At some point our relatively calm and peaceful existence will be shattered by an emergency. Maybe it’s a car wreck or a dire diagnosis. Maybe it’s a loved one’s illness or passing. Maybe it’s a mental, physical or spiritual situation that rocks us to the core and challenges who we are or our calling in life. Whatever it is, it is usually a surprise. But the desire to keep on living is strong within us and so we get up the next morning and try again, a new tactic, a new treatment or medicine or maybe a radically altered thought process about what needs to change.
Regardless, change is coming. Big change. That’s one thing that we know about life. It’s fragile and we must learn to savor every precious moment or it will pass us by. This is why we save for a rainy day, prepare for retirement and learn first aid. It’s why we test ourselves in the wilderness, on mountains, in the desert, on the ocean or in the urban areas. The more you learn and the more you experience, the better able you are to ride out a crisis when it occurs. We seek out adventure and wild things to test ourselves, to temper our metal, to test our mettle and see if we have what it takes to endure. And we don’t do it just because we’re scared of the future or of what might happen. We train and prepare so that when the time comes we can not just endure but be secure and be a help to those around us.
So, about the title of this blog. Well, there will come a time in your life when you won’t know what to do, what to say, or how to face tomorrow. You will feel lost, empty-handed and alone. Desperation and panic will begin to grip you. And at this point, you recognize that you need survival advice and direction from someone higher and wiser than you. Because the truth is, no matter how much you learn and experience, you will come to end of your mortal resources. No matter how much preparation you make, eventually everything will run out and you will find yourself at a loss as to what to do.
It’s not good to be without direction in any situation. However, worse than being lost in the wilderness of this world is being lost in the wilderness of life. Just existing. Trying to make it one more day. No goals, no ambitions, just drudgery and more of it tomorrow.
This is why, spiritually speaking, we need to have a strong faith in the One who never fails. There is a God in Heaven who wants us to call Him Father. He wants to watch over us as His children. He longs to forgive our sins and restore us to full fellowship with him and give us His Strength when our strength has failed. As the songwriter said, “When we’ve reached the end of our hoarded resources, our Fathers full giving has only begun!”
So, when you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot and hold on! Wait for God to come through. And if you don’t know Him, well, He is just a prayer away! Speak to Him as a Loving Father. Seek His forgiveness for your stubbornness, rebellion and sin and tell Him you want to be one of His children. Find a good fellowship of other truth-seekers and believers to join with and begin to live a new life of meaning and purpose. Pursue His Peace and Wisdom. Because when you don’t know what to do….He does!
