Three Ways To Start A Fire...

In the developed world, for the average person, you just turn the thermostat up or down to regulate your temperature.  We don’t really interact with nature unless we are going to or from our homes, cars, work, schools and churches etc.  We tend to go from one climate controlled environment to the next as quickly as possible, shivering in the winter or sweating in the summer as little as we can.  Truly, having modern air conditioning and heating is a real blessing for sure!

However, when you are out in the world of Nature, you soon find that there are only a few ways to regulate your temperature.  Of course, you can wear multiple layers and try to eat the right kinds of food so your body can generate and keep heat, you can build a shelter to help keep your body heat, or, you can start a fire to keep you warm, or you can use a combination of all three of the above, layers, shelter and fire.

Fire is one of the most, if not the most, important skills to learn and master.  And as important as it is to learn and own primitive means of fire starting, it is better to have some modern methods available to you to start a fire.  And this is why most bushcrafters and survival instructors will say you need to have at least three methods of fire starting with you at all times. These may be a combination of any of these:

  1. Wind and Waterproof Matches

  2. Lighter

  3. Ferrocerium Rod

  4. Road Flare

  5. Small Butane/Propane Torch with Piezo igniter

  6. Potassium Permanganete and Liquid Glycerin

  7. Flint and Steel with Char Cloth and Jute

  8. Fire Piston

  9. Magnifying Glass

  10. Solar Parabolic Reflector Fire Starter

Notice that as you go down the list above, that the methods of fire starting become more and more dependent on good weather or sunshine to start a fire.  Usually, if you stick with the first three, you will be just fine.  With a little bit of practice and knowledge of how fires start and burn, you should be able to get a fire going under any circumstances.  If you are depending on the sun for your fire, then you had better get it going during good weather and have it built up strongly with a deep bed of coals and heavy wood on top for it to weather a storm and keep on burning.  In other words, prepare for the bad times in the good times!  Actually, this is a good piece of advice for life in general, but it especially applies when you are in a survival situation.  So take and carry at least three different ways of starting a fire, and have some dry materials along with you in a Ziploc bag so that if you need to, you can get a fire going and keep warm.  No thermostat needed!

When it comes to our inner fire, we cannot hope to keep our spiritual flame alive on our own.  No method of excitement or enthusiasm can replace the genuine warmth of God’s Holy Spirit.  The greatest mistake is to think that just because we are having a good time that it means He is involved.  Laughing, crying and shouting happens at sports events and in other parts of life which do not involve any sort of spiritual blessing.  Satan, our enemy, likes for us to feel good without actually being good.  His whole agenda is to steer us away from really experiencing God.  Too often, many people fall for a cheap substitute.  When it comes really having the Presence of the Lord in your life, you are going to have to pay the very real price of submission, prayer, fasting and obedience to God’s Plan for you.  So, how are you today? Is your heart being warmed by His Spirit or are you guilty of trying to kindle your own spiritual flame?
