Survival Class Date!

I will be teaching a Basics of Survival Class on August 3-5, 2017 at our property in Southern Ohio.  It is a 48 hour class which starts at approximately 3pm on Thursday and will be over at approximately 3pm on Saturday.  If you are interested the cost is $125.00 per person.  Camping is primitive, you may use a tent or hammock the first night, the second night you will sleep in the shelter that we build.  You will need to wear appropriate clothing and shoes (think waterproof) for an outdoor environment as well you may wish to bring a clean set of clothes to change into for the drive home.  If you have any questions about some of these items, I have written about much of this in previous posts.  You will need all the items listed to pass the class as detailed below:

Here is the list of items for the Basics of Survival Class:

1. Wire coat hanger

2. Can of pork and beans or chili and can opener (Whatever you like to eat but it needs to be in a standard sized can, we will be using it for a project) This is for eating on the first night of class, you will need to bring your own appropriate food based on your dietary needs for the rest of the 48 hour class.

3. Spoon, cup and/or bowl

4. Wool blanket at least 80 percent wool (The best is surplus military, we will be sleeping in it) (Online or a surplus store)

5. 6×8 brown and silver tarp per person ( About 8 dollars at Home Depot, you must have this, you can also purchase the 8×10 size if you are sharing it with a partner or a child)

6. Non-Insulated (single wall) metal canteen or water bottle (16-32 Oz.) Get a larger mouth bottle or canteen over a small mouth one. (For boiling water, must have this, Amazon or the Self Reliance Outfitters store)

7. Knife with a minimum 4 inch blade with sheath, best if it has a full tang

8. Folding saw

9. Ferrocerrium Rod (Bigger is better)

10. 50 feet of tarred bank line (#36 heavy duty) or paracord. (Walmart)

11. 2 Contractor garbage bags 42 gallon, 3 mil. thick (Home Depot, Lowes)

12. 20 feet of duct tape (Gorilla brand is best)

13. Headlamp with fresh batteries

14. Cotton Handkerchief (or two) (Must be 100% cotton, we will be cutting pieces off of one of them)

15. Compass with rotating Bezel, mirror and a sighting notch (This is an important item to pass the class.  It is best if it is not liquid filled as a bubble will eventually form from leakage or if you fly with your compass in the unpressurized cargo area of the plane which will make navigation difficult at best and could make it highly inaccurate or even unusable.)

16. Two 48″ bungee cords (With metal or rubber coated hooks, can’t be the thick plastic hooks)

17. Magnifying glass at least 5x

18. Ground mat

19. Back pack (There is a small hike involved to get to the class area)

20. Toiletries (We will have a privacy outhouse on site)

21. Any medications you may require

22. Insect repellent

23. Bring a camp chair to sit in during the classroom instruction portions

24. Bring a pen and notebook (Rite in the Rain brand is best in case of wet weather) for taking notes during the classroom instruction portions

– Payment for taking the class ($125.00) is due in full at least one week before before class start date and is non-refundable if requested less than three days before class begins.

– Make checks or money orders payable to James Bender

If checks do not clear there will be a charge of $25.00 plus whatever bank fees may occur.
