Packing For A Trip

It is true that for many of us that love the outdoors, planning and getting ready for a trip is part of the fun.  Choosing which gear to use based on the climate conditions that you anticipate, selecting the proper sized backpack to hold all your gear and then looking on a map or GPS and marking waypoints to visit as you travel.  It is careful planning and packing that makes a trip successful and having that extra bit of survival gear “just in case” is always a good idea.

While the native Americans were able to survive in the natural environment better than most today, because they grew up in it and didn’t have the benefits (or the curse of!) technology, they did not go unprepared into the wilderness unless they had no choice.  For instance, forest fires or sudden attacks by an enemy tribe, or being captured and making an escape, could necessitate their being without any supplies.  However, this was the exception and was a true emergency, and survival situation for them as well.

In general, when they would go out into the wild areas, they would always have the means to start a fire, a couple handfuls of parched corn, some dried meat or even pemmican in a small pouch, as well as a knife.  Even though they could knap flint or obsidian, it wasn’t always available and they would prefer, just as you and I, to have a properly made blade with an attached handle of antler, bone or wood with them.  Only in training would they head into the wilderness with just their bare hands.  And only in training should we do the same!

A wise person is always prepared.  You never want to be in a situation that is a true emergency without your fire starter, your knife and a metal water container at a minimum.  Often, people leave their vehicle at a parking area to take a little day hike, get turned around, panic, and then proceed to get even more lost!  Having a small kit with you as well as a light weight packable rain jacket can go a long way toward saving your life if you need them.  You might think that that would never happen to you, but of course, that’s what we all say!  Every outdoorsman and woman knows that situations arise that are outside of your ability to control and the best way to handle it is to be prepared in advance!

Someday, we are all going on a trip into eternity.  However, this is not unexpected and need not be an emergency as we know that we will all die someday.  Therefore a wise person will consider their options and prepare accordingly.  We are told in the Scriptures that we are all sinners in need of forgiveness and that our eternal destination is one of two places, Heaven or Hell.  That’s it.  No more. No less.  No third option.  So where are you going when you die?  Have you been packing for your final trip?  Will you choose God’s forgiveness and ready your soul for Heaven? Don’t say you have plenty of time and wait until you are on your deathbed and then try to get ready at the last minute.  You might be in an accident and not have the time to pray and prepare your soul!  Give your life to Jesus right now and live prayed up, packed up and ready to go up!
