Do You EDC?
In the world of Survival, Bushcraft and those who are preparedness-minded, EDC stands for Every Day Carry. Basically, it refers to the items you have on your person every day either in your pockets or in a purse or on a belt etc. They are items that you would have if for some reason you could not get to your backpack or other gear. By it’s very definition, it is very minimal gear for sure. Your EDC is meant to be coupled with proper knowledge, training and actual use of those items. The last thing you need to do is be in a survival situation with untried and untested gear and without the knowledge of how to use it.
For many years now, my EDC consists of:
In my right pocket are my keys with a small key type multi-tool and Ferrocerium rod.
In my left pocket a plastic comb for combing through hair and/or locating ticks etc, a pocket knife which I always keep sharp, and a lighter, even though I don’t smoke.
On the right side of my belt is my cell phone.
On the left side of my belt is my SOG multi-tool.
In my back pocket is my wallet with my blood type card in it as well as a picture of my family, some emergency cash and sometimes a credit card knife or a Fresnel magnifying lens for fire starting.
So, I always have at least two cutting tools and two fire starting methods at all times. Together with knowledge, training and experience I can get by in a survival situation with just what I carry every day. Would it be easy? No way! I would rather have a whole pack of gear and an endless supply of food! But, I have enough to begin again, building a shelter, starting a fire, purifying water, finding food etc. (By the way, my multi-tool has a can opener on it. It would be a shame to find a can of food and not be able to open it. In many remote places, you might stumble upon a hunting cabin or camp and find a stash of canned food.)
So, what do you EDC? If you did a pocket dump right now, could you survive with only the items you actually have with you? Do you have the requisite training to properly use those items? If not, come and get some training. You can check us out and our Survival and Bushcraft classes at https://waypointsurvival.com/.
Spiritually speaking, you can’t always carry a Bible in your hand all the time, nor can you always stop to look it up on your smart phone or computer. In Psalm 119:11, the Psalmist says that he has hidden God’s Word in his heart that he might not sin against God. In other words, he had memorized the Scripture and had become familiar with it’s meaning so that it became part of his thinking and living. Often we are faced with situations that require us to make a split second decision. How comforting it is to have a reliable Guide like the Word of God readily available to us and always with us! No matter the situation, if you have God’s Word in your heart, it cannot be taken away from you. I encourage you today to read, study and memorize the Bible and make it a part of your Every Day Carry.
