A Stitch In Time...
The old saying is that a stitch in time saves nine. In other words, as soon as you see something ripped or torn, you should take time to fix it before it becomes worse. In the acronym C.O.L.D.E.R., which refers to how you deal with cold weather in a survival situation, the “R” stands for “Repair” which means that you need to keep your gear and your clothes in good shape by repairing breaks and tears when they occur. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the acronym, it stands for:
C. Clean (Clean clothes are warmer!)
O. Overheating (Avoid it.)
L. Loose Layers (Always dress in multiple, loose layers, not just one thick layer.)
D. Dry (Stay dry, don’t lay in the snow to make snow angels…)
E. Evaluate (How are you doing, how is your gear?)
R. Repair (If it breaks or tears, fix it!)
Obviously, this means that you must at least have a needle and and some kind of thread with you to effect said repairs. While you can make a needle out of a thorn or bone, there is just nothing quite equal to a good steel needle. So carry one, a large one (or two!) so that you can fix something before it gets worse.
A few of the repairs that I have had to make in the field are: Sewing the arm of a rain jacket that was beginning to come apart, repairing the crotch of my pants, and repairing a strap on a backpack that failed the first time it was taken afield.
For thread, you can carry just regular cotton thread if you like. However, I prefer strong nylon thread. You can use the inner strands of paracord, or, I have used 80lb test Spider Wire fishing line! You could even use dental floss which has many uses besides just cleaning between your teeth.
Spiritually speaking, God wants us to repair the breaks and tears in relationships as soon as we can and are aware of them. It’s one of the reasons, I believe, why He tells us in Ephesians 4:26, “Be angry and sin not, neither let the sun go down on your wrath.” My wife’s grandparents gave us this advice right before we headed out on our honeymoon, “Never go to bed angry”. Great advice which I have always tried to heed and it works!
How about you? Do you need to effect some repairs in your relationships? It’s a good idea to do it as soon as you can before a simple tear becomes a serious problem! A stitch in time really can save nine!
